Norway’s HELHEIM is due to play two Russian dates later this year. This will be the first foray into the region for the Viking Metallers, who incorporate their love for their Norse heritage not only into their music, but also into their live performances, with the use of VJ effects to create a spectacular backdrop, illustrating each individual song with historic and symbolic images.
Drummer HRYMR confirmed that HELHEIM would be taking their VJ, GJERT, with them to Russia. “The effects have now become an integral part of the HELHEIM and we are sure that the Russian fans will appreciate the atmosphere we are now able to create. It will be our first time in the country, and we are really looking forward to playing there, and hopefully of being able to get a glimpse of Russia, albeit a very rapid one”.
The two Russian dates are as follows:
11 September, Arktika, St Petersburg 13 September, Rock City, Novosibirisk
HELHEIM will also be appearing at the Full Force XVI Festival in Leipzig, Germany, on the night between 3rd and 4th of July. More information about HELHEIM can be found on the band’s MySpace page at www.myspace.com/helheimnorway
We are very pleased with how things worked out on Inferno. The show was thoroughly filmed and will take part on a DVD planned to be released together with Helheim's next album.
Meanwhile you can enjoy a video of Jormundgand from the show by OndeOrm:

16.02.09: HELHEIM TO USE VJ EFFECTS ON UK TOUR
From press release on the upcoming UK/Ireland tour:
Norway’s HELHEIM, well known for incorporating Norse history into their music and performances, have taken it a step further in a live collaboration with VJ Gjert, which will see the band perform each song of their set to a backdrop of Norse themed videos during their upcoming tour of the UK. Each video relates in some way to the text of the particular song, and are integrated in such a way that they become not only a backdrop, but also the lighting and special effects.
HELHEIM’S drummer HRYMR explains it in this way: “VJ’ing is not as widely known as DJ’ing, and Gjert is one of the early pioneers from the Bergen scene. VJs use live video as opposed to using pre processed video from a computer or DVD, and since the videos are mixed live, no two shows are ever likely to be exactly the same. We launched our live collaboration with VJ Gjert at our show at the Landmark Hall in Bergen, and tried it out during our Norwegian and European tours, and it proved to be a very interesting experience both for the band and the audience. We are looking forward to bringing the concept with us on our UK tour. Gjert will accompany us, together with our projectors and computers for the videos, and it will be interesting to see audience reaction. UK fans are always very receptive to new and interesting ideas, and are happy to let you know what they think.
But it’s very important to stress that we are definitely not aiming to turn HELHEIM performances into something over-technological, as is often the danger with this sort of thing. Our Norse heritage has always been at the root of HELHEIM’s work, and we see this very much as a tool that will allow us to enhance our music and lyrics with images that relate to the themes we explore, rather than just being a “light show” per se. Hopefully it will draw the audiences further into our world and let them experience it on several levels”.
Dates for the UK tour, together with DARK ESSENCE RECORDS label-mates TAAKE and VULTURE INDUSTRIES are as follows:
03 Mar - Manchester @ Music Box
04 Mar - Dublin @ Fibber Magees
05 Mar - Cork @ An Cruiscin Lan
06 Mar – Glasgow @ Ivory Blacks
07 Mar - London @ Camden Underworld
HELHEIM have also been confirmed to play at the Inferno Festival in Oslo on the Rockefeller stage at 19:45 on Saturday 11th April.
A video of the song is “Svart Seid” from HELHEIM’s “Kaoskult” album, which is part of the direct output from the band’s VJ show at the Landmark Hall, Bergen, and uses the three projectors that run VJ GJERT’S videos as the only active light sources on stage is available in high quality HERE: http://helheim.com/video/SvartSeidLandmark2.wmv.
Helheim was awarded one of four GAFFA projects in 2008 for their latest album Kaoskult.
GAFFA is a music video project organised by Vestnorsk Film (main film orgainsation in western Norway) and BRAK (rock and music organisation in Bergen). Each project gets solid amounts of economical support for marketing and video production.
GAFFA was supported by Bergen Municipality, Bergen Media By, BIFF (Bergen International Film Festival).. all strong names. Still the project was unfortunately only able to gather money for the first two projects, with the Datarock (the project with first priority) video already being on the stairs.
We are of course disappointed by this development, but still we learned a lot from this long process - with the first meeting being already in January 2008 - and hope for another shot in 2009.

02.04.08: BEHIND THE GATES OF HELHEIM #2
The second video in this series of behind the scenes footage is now ready. This video shows Vgandr recording the track Åndevind from the Kaoskult album in Conclave studio in Alvøen right outside of Bergen.
A general description of "The Behind the gates.." project: The "Behind the gates of Helheim"-project is an ambitous and hairy goal to give our fans and critics a possibility to get a peak into what is going on with Helheim besides stage performances. We want to give our audience a view into rehearsals, studio performances, backstage, etc.
